Dr. Eric Sauer, Ph.D.

Eric Sauer is a licensed psychologist who has been providing clinical services since 1991.

Current Position: Dr. Sauer is an Associate Professor in the counseling psychology program at Western Michigan University. He is currently serving as director of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services-Grand Rapids (CCPS-GR), and co-director of training for the counseling psychology doctoral program. In 2006, he also began working as an associate at Jenison Psychological Services.

Education and Training: Dr. Sauer received his B.S. from Michigan State University in 1988 and his M.A. in counseling psychology from Ball State University in 1991. He earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Michigan State University in 1999. He completed his predoctoral internship at The University of Iowa and postdoctoral training at The University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Comments from Dr Sauer about the therapeutic process: My general goal is to help my clients gain an understanding of why they are who they are (why they act how they act, why they feel like they do), and then, if they want to change, I help to guide them towards their identified goals. My approach is collaborative: the client is the expert on him- or herself, while I provide the expertise on how to create change. Change might include an increase in self-esteem, or self-acceptance, an increase in self-understanding, or an elimination of unhealthy behaviors or patterns.
